If Lizzy McAlpine was emo, it might sound like Waveflyer.

Listening to their latest release ‘Glue‘, feels kind of zigzaggy. Like walking from the smoking area into the chaotic bar and back out to the quiet haze. The opening is so chill and slowly builds to this massive crash where the vocals go from sad girl stuff to Hayley Williams screaming about existential depression in 0.2 seconds.

You know when you’re in the smoking area, watching the cigarette smoke swirl slowly around randomers’ heads, up to the heated lamps, feeling the warmth on your face as the smell of your friend’s watermelon vape reminds you of how hard it is to give up flavoured air (why do they make it taste so good?)

You’re following them inside for round number 3 or maybe it’s 4, as you put that first foot through the door the noise from the band hits you and the only thought you can hear is “Beamish“. Before you know it you’re back outside with a full pint glass, searching your pockets for skins, only half listening as your friends debate weather to go Pav or Crane next. THAT is how this song feels. It’s spacey and peaceful, then all of sudden angry and pissed off, and then we’re back to spacey. You’d best be ready to lock into the feels.

The 4 members of Waveflyer have managed to write a song that feels like when you’re so fucking tired of feeling sad, or angry or nothing at all and you’re just waiting for the feelings to go away. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. Apparently it gets better, but waiting for “better” feels absolutely shit.

Listening to ‘Glue‘ helps though.
